WHITE PAPER

Predictive Analytics Introduction and Validation

When you think about it, we’ve made a pretty good bargain with wind turbine blades. We ask the blades to function regardless of the damage done by wind, water, hail and other eroders. To stay exposed to the elements while providing us with the life-sustaining power we need to thrive. And since modern science hasn’t found the cure for entropy, our part of the bargain is to keep the blades in good working order. But judging the precise moment when the damage is significant enough to warrant shutting the turbine down can be tricky. There are seasonal and economic ramifications to consider, and often there is no clear and easy path to optimization. To act or to let it alone is the perpetual question.

Leading edge erosion is often repaired based solely on the risk of structural damage. Only the most damaged blades are prioritized in the maintenance budget, as blade repairs are expensive in costs and downtime. However, degraded blade aerodynamics results in significant loss of energy production, which in turn results in hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual lost revenue across a typical farm.

OVERVIEW

Leading Edge Erosion Analytics and Diagnostics Quantify AEP Loss and Optimize Your Repair Budget

Leading edge erosion energy loss from leading edge erosion (LEE) has become increasingly important as wind turbines operate at higher and higher tip speeds. Initial damage can initiate within a few years and grow as fast as one damage category per year and cost tens of thousands of dollars in lost production per year.

How to quantify AEP loss and optimize your wind turbine repair budget at scale using the new leading edge erosion analytics and diagnostics from HUVR.

Easy to identify but difficult to quantify, leading edge erosion is the most prevalent blade defect, and it costs millions in lost production. Using HUVR’s new LEAD analytics, you can predict how leading edge erosion will continue to eat away at your blades, and how that will impact AEP in the coming years. Armed with our proven prediction engine, HUVR uses the blade inspections you have today to accurately forecast how your environment will affect the leading edge of your blades. We apply that progression of worsening blade conditions against the expected performance of your turbines, factoring in known details like availability and blade length. The result is an understanding of not only predicted blade condition over the next five years but the reduction in AEP in dollars. When compared with blade repair cost estimates, you get a true ROI for each year, making your repair strategy a real breeze!

– Easily view a single turbine, a set, a site, or your entire fleet
– Understand blade condition, AEP loss, and repair estimates for each turbine, each year
– Prioritize and package up repairs for internal repair teams or external vendors
– Use HUVR’s inspection data platform to track inspections for blades, gearboxes, and more!
